Dr. Long attended college alongside Thomas Wayne whom he respected. Dr. Long went on to become a professor of psychology at Gotham State University and also served as a chair member. Long led the majority who disagreed with ex-Professor Crane's fear experiment and had him ousted. In dire financial strains, Dr. Long was part of the 'Save the University' campaign. Recent sabotages conducted by Crane contributed to the lack of funds. As the Scarecrow, Crane attempted to solidify his revenge by stealing the donated funds from Long. Long was later doused by Scarecrow's fear gas and experienced visions of death. Long remained in the academic field.
