The Vanmoor Charter School for Science is a private high school in Dakota City. It is completely funded by Edwin Alva, which he considers a large investment as trying to capture Static for bioresearch. Only the finest and most privileged can attend the Institute and take advantage of the first class facilities. In a note of interest, there are no teachers and upper classmen run the classes. It also appears that the Institute serves as an entry point into a career with Alva Industries.
While in his freshman year at Dakota Union High School, Virgil Hawkins was invited to a discovery session, a special six week seminar in science and technology. He was assigned to Lab 16, led by Specs & Trapper, where he met Daisy Watkins and the twins, Duncan & Henry. During this time, Specs & Trapper were assigned to craft a way to capture Static alive for Alva. They used the Lab 16 inventions to create the Alva Machine. However, after it failed to do so and created a public controversy, the Vanmoor Institute was shut down. A few months later, Specs & Trapper kidnapped Alva Junior and used the abandoned school as their secret base of operations.
