The planet Thanagar revolves around the star, Polaris. At first Thanagar was home to a primitive culture but Icthulhu appeared and offered them enlightenment in exchange for their patronage. The Thanagarians agreed and worshipped Icthulhu as their god. It bestowed agriculture, mathematics, philosophy, and more to the planet's people. Over time, the Thanagarians stopped believing in Icthulhu and drove it away with their Nth metal weapons.
Its civilization of militarism grew and is became considered a conqueror race. In recent times, Thanagar was locked in war with the Gordanians. With the Gordanians closing in on Thanagar's homeworld, the Thanagarians launched a last resort plan to sacrifice several planets, including Earth, to create a hyperspace bypass and teleport several fleets to Gordania. The Justice League escaped capture and saved Earth. The fleet returned home to find their people defeated. Thanagar was enslaved by the Gordanians.
