South America was chosen by Hippolyta as one of the sites to hide a fragment of the only key that could open the gates to Tartarus. It resided in a Mayan temple, guarded by a giant snake. For centuries, it lay dormant. In the modern day, the continent is notorious for the drug trade and other criminal enterprises. However, several countries have begun to adopt a self-sustaining and green initiative to curb pollution. After graduating college in 1997, South America was one of the known locations Dick Grayson chose to study Capoeira and later, lived with the Los Invisibales. In order to help save the Amazons, the Justice League blindly went after the key fragments. The Flash and J'onn Jonzz arrived in South America. The Flash impulsively took the fragment and awakened the snake. While Jonzz was weakened, the Flash defeated the snake on his own.
