The Phantom Zone is a unique area of interdimensional space that exists outside of the normal space-time continuum. It is a barren region in every sense of the word and lacks any tangible objects. On the planet Krypton, Jor-El discovered the pocket and named it the Phantom Zone. He brought this discovery before the Council as a more logical way of punishing criminals. Thus, from that point on, Kryptonians banished their most dangerous criminals to the Zone in a non-corporeal molecular state through the Phantom Zone Projector. There they exist in a neutral yet immortal state of being. With Krypton's days numbered, Jor-El proposed a radical plan: to hide every Kryptonian in the Phantom Zone except for one. He or she would take the Projector and navigate a ship to a safe distance and repopulate a suitable planet. The Council rejected his plan and sided with Brainiac's conclusions.

The known occupants of the Phantom Zone prior to Krypton's destruction was a giant insect-like beast and two Kryptonian war criminals, Jax-Ur and Mala. Years later, the founding members of the Justice League sans an injured Batman decided it was best to banish Doomsday to the Phantom Zone rather than kill him. In the 30th century, the people of Bgtzl refer to the Zone as the Bgztl Buffer Zone and shunt their mass there when they use their powers of intangibility.
