Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It is named after the Roman god of war and nicknamed the "Red Planet" for its large concentration of iron oxide. Mars holds the record for the tallest mountain in the Solar System. Having similar features to Earth, Mars, however, is considered an inactive planet.

1000 Earth years ago, Martian society was experiencing its golden age, the height of peace and prosperity. It abruptly ended when the Imperium invaded. The two races fought each other for centuries with the Imperium eventually gaining the upper hand. A last ditch effort was commenced by the Martians to infiltrate the Imperium base and unleash a paralyzing nerve gas. The operation was a success but only one Martian survived the war, J'onn Jonzz.

In order to keep the Imperium in suspended animation indefinitely, Jonzz sealed the citadel and guarded it for 500 years. In the 21st century, he went into a hibernation cycle. Shortly after, an astronaut named J. Allen Carter stumbled upon the citadel and reopened it. The Imperium revived and killed Carter. When Jonzz awoke, he realized what happened and journeyed to Earth to warn its people.
