During the construction of the Akosombo Dam in Ghana in the 1960's, the Volta River Basin was flooded. This created Lake Volta, the largest manmade lake. It is also the largest lake reservoir by a surface area of 3,283 square miles. The Volta River was also split and held back by the dam, creating the White Volta River and Black Volta River. While the dam provided much needed electricity, it also forced nearly 80,000 people to relocate and Lake Volta destroyed their homeland.

According to legend, a long-lost Ashanti palace is located at the bottom of Lake Volta. The palace is said to house the artifacts of a talented Ashanti goldsmith, all worth millions. In the 20th century, Dr. Anokye, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Ghana, found a map of ancient Kumasi detailing the palace's location. He became a target of Osebo, who stole the map and proceeded to destroy the Akosombo Dam and drain out Lake Volta to reach the palace. Anansi the Spider and Static intervened.
