Easter Island is a Polynesian island located in the most southeastern point of the Pacific Ocean. About 63 square meters in area, it was formed by at least three volcanos and considered one of the most isolated islands in the world. The first Polynesian settlement is believed to have happened between 300 and 800 AD and was led by Hotu Matua. Eventually, a distinct class system was formed in which an ariki or god-king led the Rapanui people. For the purpose of religion and politics, 887 Moai statues were uniformly erected around the entire island.
European contact first happened on April 5, 1722. Since it was Easter Sunday, Jacob Roggeveen, a Dutch explorer, named the island, Easter Island. Soon after the influx of European contact, the Rapanui society collapsed. Exhausted resources, famine, disease, and civil war are the major causes of this collapse. To compound matters, on December 1862, slavers from Peru raided the island. On September 9, 1888, Chile annexed Easter Island after signing the Treaty of Annexation of the Island with the Rapanui.
In the 21st century, the Justice League interfered with a spell cast by Dr. Fate to repair the seal on a portal and prevent the Old Ones from returning to Earth. In order to conjure a new spell, he sent mostly everyone away. Aquaman and Wonder Woman were teleported to Easter Island. Several Moai were damaged in the battle. With Wonder Woman winning, Aquaman turned the tide by tackling her into the Pacific Ocean.
