The Territory of Utah was incorporated on September 9, 1850 and was later admitted into the Union as a state on January 4, 1896. The territory encompassed an area larger than the state, including most of modern-day Nevada. Located in southern Nevada, a geothermal aquifer near Death Valley formed a limestone cavern. It was named Devil's Hole and is home to the Devil's Hole Pupfish. A town was formed and named after the site and operated as any typical late Wild West era locale. The nearest neighboring town was 50 miles away.
The residents of Devil's Hole began to see a sky monster in 1883, which turned out to be an airship built by Ra's Al Ghul and his followers. Some time later, Jonah Hex arrived in the town in search of Arkady DuVall. After soliciting the help of a barmaid, Hex learned about this alleged monster. Sensing a connection between DuVall and the monster, Hex investigated and his hunch was correct.
