Founded in the 19th Century, Central City is located in Missouri across the Mississippi River from Keystone City and is only 500 miles away from Metropolis. It initially was an important trade hub for the cattle industry. With the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, Central City's importance expanded to become one of the major travel hubs of the midwest area. In the age of super heroes and super villains, crime surged to unprecedented numbers. A seedy bar on 4th Street became an infamous hangout for criminals and supervillains. The Flash, Wally West, dedicated himself to reducing crime and working with the Central City Orphange. Every Christmas, the Flash would promise to get the one gift the children of the Orphanage all wanted. In his civilian guise, West works in forensics at the Central City Police Department.

After fleeing Gorilla City, Grodd was given asylum in Central City's Riverbluffs Research Center by resident scientist, Dr. Corwin. A series of mysterious thefts and amnesic criminals prompted the attention of the Justice League. The case came to a head when the Flash and Green Lantern teamed with Solovar to stop Grodd. Unfortunately, Grodd activated his force field generator's asynchronous dimensional interface and hid Central City from sight. Grodd then used his Mind Control Helmet to take over the minds of Central City's citizens. The Flash defeated Grodd while the rest of the Justice League prevented several missiles from hitting an exposed Gorilla City.

Months later, General McCormick completed his pet project, the Anti Fusion Device, at a military base near Central City. The Heart of Darkness made its way to McCormick's hands. Under the Heart's control, he attacked Central City to attract the attention of the League. While the Flash learned about the Heart from Mophir, its guardian, he raced to the Watchtower to stop the Heart once and for all. A short time later, the Flash was occupied with his annual task of finding a present for the Central City Orphanage. This time, they wanted the DJ Rubber Ducky. Sold out in the city, he ran all the way to Tokyo and convinced the toy's company president, Mr. Hama to gift him the last Ducky. However, on route, the toy was damaged when the Flash stopped Ultra Humanite from attacking the Gedde Natural History Museum.

Over a year later, for his charitable works, part in stopping the Thanagarian invasion, and crusade to reduce crime, Central City declared an official Flash Appreciation Day and planned to open the Flash Museum on the same day. While running through the city, the Flash overheard a cry for help in the abandoned Skate Central Disco. It turned out to be a trap set by Mirror Master. Later that day, while being awarded the key to the city, the Flash was hit with a Giant Boomerang sent by Captain Boomerang. Batman and Orion arrived with news that several of the Flash's enemies were out to kill him. Mirror Master, Captain Boomerang, and Captain Cold attacked the Flash during the museum opening. Although the museum was trashed, the Flash was more than happy that no innocent bystanders were hurt.
