Based on archaeological records, the area of Kolkata in eastern India was first inhabitated by man 2000 years ago. The first record, however, was in 1690 when the English East India Company set up a stronger presence in order to consolidate trade. Kolkata was comprised of three main villages, Kalikata, Govindapur and Sutanuti. Soon after, it became a battle ground for four imperialist powers: Britain, France, Netherlands, and Portugal. Eventually, the British captured it in 1722 and referred to the city as Calcutta. It became the capital city of British India and opium became its cash crop. However, as time went on, the British modernized Calcutta and the Indians pushed for independence. After World War II, famine and politics led to increased violence and economic instability. In the 90's, reform began to help Calcutta grow again.
In search of Robin and Talia, Ra's al Ghul and Batman journeyed across the world. Following a clue secretly implanted by Ra's, they first landed in Calcutta and fought against several members of the Society of Shadows. It is unknown if it was simply a plant or if Ra's also had an established base in Calcutta.
