Africa is the second largest continent in the world and is believed to be the origin of modern humans. The some billion people live in an unstable state thanks to outside forces such as colonialism, AIDS, and the Cold War. In the early 20th century, the Hawkins Family went on a trip to Africa to visit the country of Ghana. Static encountered Anansi the Spider, the most famous super hero of West Africa. They teamed up to defeat Anansi's enemy Osebo and stop him from pillaging an Ashanti palace hidden in Lake Volta. The government then allowed Dr. Anokye to conduct an underwater expedition of Volta. He was able to salvage various artifacts, including the Golden Spider, and set up an exhibit at the Dakota Museum of History called "Ancient Treasures of Africa."
Poaching continues to go on in the 2050's. Despite radio transmitters implanted on animals by the government, criminals have figured out a way to safely remove the implant. Renowned conservationist, James Van Dyle was secretly a poacher himself and sold a family of gorillas. One was later subjected to splicing and targeted Van Dyle. After Batman convinced it to spare Van Dyle's life, Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis accompanied the gorilla back to Africa. The wildlife was reduced but the gorilla vowed to become its protector.
