In the 1930's, Dr. William Bleckwenn utilized a Truth Serum in a technique called narcoanalysis. A controlled intravenous hypnotic medication was justified as a way to safely obtain information and correctly diagnose a patient's illness. Several serums used are ethanol, scopolamine, sodium amytal, sodium pentothal, 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate, and temazepam.

Today, the serum is an infamous psychoactive chemical substance used to extract information from enemy operatives. Although illegal by international law, some government agencies are reported to use the serum such as India's Central Bureau of Investigation whom allegedly uses intravenous barbiturates. The overall reliability is questionable as a person can be trained to resist the urge to tell the truth or just as easily, some live in a state of being in which fact and fantasy are one.

In the late 1990's, Red Claw kidnapped Alfred Pennyworth and Agent Frederick to gain access to Project Excalibur. Unable to successfully use physical force, Red Claw injected them with Truth Serum. While Frederick gave in first, both appeared to be speaking gibberish until Red Claw realized they were telling her the passcode.
