In ancient times, the Old Ones attacked Atlantis. King Poseidon gathered ambient mystical energy and forged it into a single weapon, the Trident of Poseidon. With it, he banished the demons to interdimensional space. However, the same magic that was used for the Trident were also drawn from the same energy powered spells that prevented Atlantis from sinking into the ocean. It soon sunk to the ocean depths and its people were forced to adapt living under the sea.
As a symbol of royalty, the Trident was passed down from king to king. While it stood mainly as a ceremonial decoration, each king was told of its importance if the Old Ones ever returned to threaten the planet. It is currently owned by King Arthur, known as Aquaman to the surface world. During a coup, Orm, Arthur's half-brother, took over and stole the Trident. Arthur teamed up with the Justice League to defeat him and took back his birthright. Months later, Arthur allied with Dr. Fate to reseal a breach between dimensions that imprisoned the Old Ones. The Justice League unknowingly interfered in the spell, which required the Trident and a deadman, Solomon Grundy. The League, Grundy, and Fate journeyed into the dimension to face the Old Ones while Arthur returned home to lead his army. He later routed them back to the dimension and with Wonder Woman and Superman's help, resealed the breach with a boulder-like object and the Trident.
