Trick rings are a staple of a stage magician's performance. Two or more separate steel rings are magically connected and interlocked as the magician uses his slight of hand. These same rings were part of the Riddler's puzzle technology. After luring his former boss, Daniel Mockridge, to his Wasteland nightclub, the Riddler challenged Mockridge to solve them. Instead, Mockridge entangled himself in the rings like a pair of handcuffs.
