For his part in betraying the Greek Gods of Mount Olympus, Hades was banished to Tartarus where he would reign over the dead. Hippolyta, although manipulated by Hades, was sentenced to watch over the gateway to Tartarus for all time. The only way to open it was a one-of-a-kind key. She broke it up into four pieces and spread them across the planet. Hippolyta kept the fourth in her possession as a reminder of her sin. In the 21st century, Felix Faust made contact with Hades and struck a deal with him. In exchange for ultimate knowledge, Faust would free him. To do so he needed the Tartarus Key. Using gems attuned to mystic vibrations of the Key, Faust arrived on Themyscira and fought the Amazons. Wonder Woman happened to be returning at the same time and was forced to help Faust to restore her people to life again.

The Justice League joined Wonder Woman to help find the fragments. One was at a Museum of Natural History, a temple in South America, and at a Metro Mall. Each fragment had a guardian spirit attached it. At the Museum, it was a giant statue of a warrior. At the temple, it was a giant fire-breathing snake. And at the Metro Mall, it was technically a curse that made people see monsters in each other. Faust managed to evade a confrontation with the League and opened Tartarus. With Hades distracted with Hippolyta, Wonder Woman destroyed the Tartarus Key and initiated a process that drew back anything near the gateway inside. Hades, Faust, and a zombie army were all swept in. Wonder Woman narrowly escaped with Hippolyta.
