According to legend, during ancient times, a warrior in Africa named Tantu asked Anasi the Spider for the power of all animals so that he may protect innocent lives. Anasi obliged and gave him the Tantu Totem, a talisman in the shape of a fox. It channels the power of the Red, a morphogenic energy field. By thinking of a specific animal, the ability is drawn from the Red through the Totem and the user can mimic it. The animal is briefly seen in spirit form as the ability is transferred.
The Tantu Totem was passed down from generation to generation to relatives of Tantu. Reverend Richard Jiwe was the latest owner but he was killed by his own half-brother General Maksai for it. Jiwe's daughter Mari Jiwe McCabe fled to America but later returned to Africa and stole the Totem. With it, she became the super hero Vixen.
