The Sonic Drill is a WayneTech ultrasonic prototype constructed at a Chicago facility. While being delivered to Wayne Enterprises in Gotham City by train, the Drill was a target of Count Vertigo, leader of a rebel offshoot of the Society of Shadows. Batman and Talia recovered the Drill after using cathedral bells to disorient Vertigo. Talia then betrayed Batman and took the device. Batman managed to secretly sabotage it without her knowledge. While in flight, Talia was instructed to test the gun by her father, Ra's Al Ghul. The sabotage was apparent and it overloaded. Talia threw it overboard where it shattered to pieces in a vast mountain range.
Over 50 years later, Jim Tate presented a prototype sonic wave device to his superiors at Wayne-Powers, with enough power to generate a force that shatters steel. It was shelved and never realized. Now unemployed and desperate for money, Tate agreed to build a second one for his contact, Istivan Hegedesh, at Force Tech. Dressed as a high-tech thief dubbed Armory, Tate stole components all over Neo Gotham, including a high capacity mother board from Gotham Industrial Electronics. Hegedesh used the finished gun to kill all witnesses but Batman interfered. Armory then disabled the sonic device with a high-adhesive.
