Roscoe's Retrovirus is a rare disease that is fatal to its victims. Lex Luthor bribed Dr. Vale, head physician at Stryker's Island Penitentiary, to lace John Corben's food with the disease. Once Corben learned his infection was terminal, he would chalk it up to his missions around the world and be easily manipulated. Luthor offered him an alternative medical surgery to save his life. Corben agreed but what he didn't know was the surgery would transfer his brain into a robot body. Upon later investigation, Clark Kent discovered the Retrovirus hidden in Vale's office within a case marked for Biohazardous material using his X-Ray Vision.
