The Phantom Zone Projector was an invention of the late Jor-El of the planet Krypton. The ability to teleport was based on the idea that dimensions vibrate at a certain frequency. Jor-El created a crystal homing signal to home in on other dimensions. It was used as an alternative to conventional prison facilities. Only the worst criminal offenders and aggressive beasts were subject to the Projector and sent to an interdimensional space known as the Phantom Zone in a noncorporeal molecular state. To prevent abuse of the device, a fingerprint reader was installed. Only those of the El bloodline could activate it. When Jor-El concluded Krypton was doomed, he proposed a bold plan to temporarily place every Kryptonian in the Phantom Zone and one volunteer would relocate to another planet. Brainiac and the Council rejected it. As a last ditch effort, Jor-El placed the Projector in the lifeboat ship with his son Kal-El.

Decades later, Professor Hamilton examined a compartment on Superman's lifeboat and discovered the Projector. While touching the dials, he accidentally released a giant beast. Luckily, Superman was observing and helped beat it while Hamilton tried to return it. They then observed Mala from the Projector's screen. After some consultation, Superman decided to free her. Enraged she would be reimprisoned, Mala stole the Projector and released Jax-Ur. Together, they tried to take over Earth. Superman and Hamilton consoled the Memory Module and Psion Receptor to access the Projector's schematics and create a second one. In the battle, Superman was banished to the Phantom Zone and the Projector destroyed. Fortunately, the crystal survived and Hamilton salvaged it to complete his. They traced Superman through the energy signature of his Anti-Kryptontie Suit and returned him back to Earth. Jax-Ur and Mala were then teleported back to the Phantom Zone.

Years later, during the construction of new Watchtowers in space, the Projector was relocated from the Fortress of Solitude to the main tower in a secret room. After Doomsday was captured, the founders sans Batman decided the only decision was to send it to the Phantom Zone and Superman utilized the Projector.
