The Orpheus is a privately-owned satellite launched into orbit over the Sahara Desert synchronously by Ra's Al Ghul. It is named after the Greek master lyricist, Orpheus, who is also credited with teaching civilization to humanity. It was electronically linked to a series of bombs placed never every Lazarus Pit on Earth. Orpheus was programmed to trigger the bombs at the moment when the Sun and the Moon are in alignment in order to cause the greatest upheaval in Earth's geomagnetic field.
After finding a link between Orpheus and Ra's, Batman and Robin flew to the Sahara where Batman infiltrated Ra's' desert compound. In the confrontation, Batman managed to sabotage the countdown and eliminated Orpheus' transmission by tossing his sword at the panel. Unarmed, he still defeated Ra's Al Ghul, who then disappeared into a Lazarus Pit. It is unknown what ever happened to the Orpheus satellite.
