The MP-40 Isotope is an experimental mutagenic adaptagen developed by Wayne Bio-Medical. Dr. Stella Bateson hypothesized the MP-40 would restore Clayface to a human and allow him to keep, even increase, his shape shifting power. During the procedure, Batman intervened and the angered Clayface attacked. For some time, a dissolved Clayface, the MP-40, and industrial waste interacted. It was enough to resurrect the villain and give him new powers.
