Handed down generation after generation, the first men appoint a guardian to watch over the Heart of Darkness. If it manages to possess someone, the two ways to exorcise the Ophidians are to decapitate the victim or use a special gem to generate pure light and drive the spirits back into the Heart. The gem is a medium-sized red stone that is embedded within the guardian's clothing. After telling his people's origins to the Flash, Mophir allowed him to take the gem with him to battle the Heart of Darkness. While Flash inspected his teammates at the Watchtower, a possessed Green Lantern shattered and destroyed the gem.
