The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a modern lightweight fighter plane designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the 1930's. The all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear were three features that made it a modern marvel. Its first flight took place on May 29, 1935 and first served in the Spanish Civil War. It was never fully replaced and was used in World War II by the Axis Powers. It was the driving force of Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe air force and served many functions: interceptor, bomber escort, fighter bomber, all-weather fighter, bomber destroyer, ground-attack aircraft, and reconnaissance. 33,984 total 109's were built. The Reichsluftfahrtministerium (German Aviation Ministry), designated the plane based on its manufacturer Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Bf) but it was renamed renamed Messerschmitt AG. It went by many nicknames but the most popular was Messer. The 109's continuted to be used into the 1950's by the Swiss.

When the Justice League went back in time to stop Vandal Savage from continuing to change history, they mainly encountered Messerschmitt Bf 109's in German-occupied France. The League was aided by the Blackhawk Squadron. While outnumbered, the Squadron were more talented pilots and combined with the League's super powers, the 109's were easily destroyed.
