Materioptikon

Back to Objects Main > Materioptikon

Real Identity: Unknown
Appearances (JL): Only A Dream Part One
Powers: Mental Manipulation
Voiced By: Not Applicable

To aid in his studies, Dr. Bill Brooks designed and constructed the Materioptikon. It can temporarily gift people with limited extra-sensory perception while they sit in the device's rays. However, Brooks' research was not well-received and he was forced to relocate to Stryker's Island Penitentiary, the only place he could get volunteers. After a specified amount of time seated in the Materioptikon, the subject then is tested with the Zener Cards Test, in which they must guess what card is being held up without seeing the image.

Probably as a precaution, the only test volunteer was a minor criminal named John Dee, a former LexCorp employee arrested for smuggling weapons. Confident in getting paroled, Dee wished to continue in the studies and even suggested increasing the range of the device. Brooks, however, was about to deny him when Dee learned he was denied parole. A prison riot soon broke out. Dee rushed to Brooks' office, knocked him out, and exposed himself to the Materioptikon at maximum strength. He was found in a catatonic state and was transferred to the infirmary. However, Dee awoke with permanent mental powers and escaped Stryker's.
