In the late 1960's, Pillsbury developed the Space Food Sticks in reaction to the popularity of the Space Race to the Moon. Over the decades, it evolved into the energy bar, snacks fortified with physical energy mostly in the form of calories. It was mostly marketed to athletes but has become a more mainstream product in the modern age. A standard energy bar has 200 to 300 calories, 3 to 9 grams of fat, 7 to 15 grams of protein, and 20 to 40 grams of carbohydrates. Fiber is also added for bulk rather than extra calories.

A popular energy bar is the Lightspeed Energy Bar. It has the slogan, "A big burst of flavor in every bite!" For a brief time, the Flash endorsed the product in a commercial that depicted a battle in Central City with Captain Boomerang, Heatwave, and Mirror Master. A child saves the Flash by tossing him a Lightspeed Energy Bar which re-energizes him and gives him the strength to defeat all three villains. After the height of Glorious Godfrey's popularity and the Heart of Darkness crisis, the Flash eased away from the deal. He was also given several standees done in his image. After being touched, it plays the slogan spoken by the Flash. Months later, when Superman was caught in a takion stream and sent thousands of years into the future, he scavenged several Lightspeed bars.

On one Memorial Day, Task Force X infiltrated the Justice League Unlimited Watchtower to steal the Annihilator. Deadshot disguised pieces of a ceramic handgun in several Lightspeed Energy Bar wrappers. Months later, Orion accidentally destroyed the last Flash-Lightspeed standee when it startled him.
