When Jor-El conducted research on his planet's irradiated core, he discovered its fatal outcome. A bold plan was drafted. One volunteer would pilot a one man spaceship to a chosen planet and release the other Kryptonians from the Phantom Zone. The plan was dismissed by Krypton's Council and Brainiac. When Jor-El discovered Brainiac's betrayal, he barely escaped with his life and initiated a back up plan. The spaceship was to become a lifeboat. His son, Kal-El, would be sent to a planet with a yellow sun with the Phantom Zone Projector and a pre-recorded holographic message from his parents. It launched just as Krypton imploded. When the wormhole was activated, several pieces of Krypton were transported along with the lifeboat.

It landed in Smallville, Kansas and was discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent. They took Kal-El on as their child and hid the lifeboat in the Kent Family farmhouse. Years later, they revealed the ship to Kal-El, now Clark Kent when he was a teenager. After developing a partnership with S.T.A.R. Labs, Superman allowed them to study the lifeboat. They modified it for interstellar travel, which Superman used for missions off Earth such as pursuing Lobo, relocating Bizarro, tracing onboard coordinates back to the Xeno Galaxy where Krypton was, monitoring a black hole, and a phantom signal set up by Darkseid. After Darkseid kidnapped Superman, it appears the ship was disposed of.

Years later, when the Justice League was attacked by Dr. Destiny, several members where subjected to their worst nightmares. Superman dreamed he couldn't control his powers anymore. Despite J'onn J'onzz' appearance, he fled to Smallville and hid in the lifeboat. J'onzz convinced Superman to let him establish a telepathic link and sever Destiny's hold.
