The Lasso of Truth was forged by the god, Hephaestus from the Golden Girdle of Gaea, empowered by the goddess Hestia with fire, and sent by Eros from Mount Olympus to Queen Hippolyta. The Lasso was designed to aid a champion in battle against the outside world and bypass the untrustworthy nature of man. Any man who comes in contact with it is compelled to tell the truth. It is also unbreakable and indestructible. The Lasso was kept on Themyscira in the Temple of Athena until someone among the Amazons proved themselves worthy as a champion.

During the Imperium's invasion of Earth, Princess Diana could not stand by idle. She snuck into the Temple of Athena and stole the armor and Lasso. Unknown to Diana, both were unactivated to their full power. For years, it remained that way and the Lasso was used as a conventional weapon. It wasn't until the brief time when Felix Faust took over Tartarus that Queen Hippolyta revealed the truth to Diana, now known as Wonder Woman. With a touch, Hippolyta activated the armor and Lasso. Troubled by the morality of when to use this Lasso, Wonder Woman discovered she feels an intuition and seemlessly uses it. During an interrogation of a minor demon named Abnegazar, she felt this and forced him to lead her and Shayera Hol to Faust's location. Abnegazar revealed telling the truth hurts a demon and was freed.
