The hotbox is a form of punishment used by Boss Biggis on his chain gang prisoners. In order to set an example and keep his prisoners docile, a random person is chosen and shoved into a metal box. They are left for hours in the box and often suffer heat stroke from the desert sun. While Gaff Morgan and Dan Reilly were serving time in hotboxes, something Reilly said triggered Morgan's memory and made him remember he was Batman.
