The Golden Spider was created by Kwaku Anansi to hold the power of illusion granted by Nyame, the Sky King. The Spider then became part of a tradition in which one Anansi would pass it on to their successor each generation. However, it was lost 100's of years ago in an Ashanti palace. If someone else other than Anansi the Spider were to possess the Golden Spider, they could drain all their power back into the Spider or have similar illusion-based abilities.
In the early 21st century, the Golden Spider was discovered by Dr. Anokye while he was excavating an Ashanti Palace underwater in Lake Volta. It became part of the Ancient Treasures of Africa exhibit for the Dakota Museum of History. When Osebo, Onini, and Mmoboro arrived in search of it, Anokye hid the Spider in Sharon Hawkins' jacket. Osebo eventually gained control of it and nearly defeated Anansi, but the hero had one last trick and filled the room with dozens of Golden Spider illusions. Anansi recovered the object and returned to west Africa.
