While trying to stop Two-Face from robbing the Gotham Mint of $2 million in two dollar bills, Batman was captured and tied to a giant penny. He would then be flipped, as an homage to Two-Face's motif, and killed clean or killed harshly depending on the side he landed. Batman managed to steal Two-Face's coin and freed himself from the restraints. Instead, the giant penny immobilized the henchman aiding the villain. After the case was closed, Batman was allowed to keep the penny and somehow secretly towed it into the Batcave.

The giant penny became one of the more staple mementos of Batman's career and one of the more labor-intensive objects to be cleaned by Alfred Pennyworth. Years later, during a confrontation between the Justice League and a Thanagarian military squad, the Flash used his enhanced speed to shove the giant penny and smash his opponent. 65 years later, the giant penny is still standing in the Batcave.
