In WayneTech's Optical Research Lab, a researcher named Dr. Karos and his assistant Sam Giddell proposed a project based on light refraction called the "Cloak of Invisibility." A specialized plastic was embedded with filaments. When an electric current is applied, light is bent instead of absorbed and the cloak becomes invisible. However, when Karos discovered the invisible plastic was toxic to humans, he withdrew his proposal. Karos then recently passed away, possibly from the effects of the cloak.

Sam Giddell continued Karos' research and tried to remove the side-effect without success. While preparing to destroy it, Giddell never noticed until later that part of the cloak was missing. His errand boy, Lloyd Ventris stole it and used it to commit robberies. In a final battle, Batman exposed the cloak by throwing several Bat Shuriken into a water tower and spilling its contents onto Ventris.
