Chess has its origins in the 6th century during the Gupta Empire in India and Persia in the 7th century. It was initially a model of teaching war strategy among the nobility but it slowly spread among all classes as a game and sport. In the modern age, two players, one black and one white, play on a 64 color alternating square eight by eight grid with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Standard gameplay ranges from ten minutes to an hour in three phases called opening, middlegame, and endgame. Players take turns moving one piece to one square and aim to capture each other's by moving into the space occupied by the opponent.

Among the Justice League, chess is a popular game to play between missions. Shining Knight and Vigilante are known to indulge in it in the mess hall. While trying to coax Shayera Hol back into action, Aquaman challenged her to games of chess in the Tower of Fate. A.M.A.Z.O., itself, was intrigued and wanted to play, as well.
