The Boom Tube is an informal term assigned to extradimensional wormholes generated by the New Gods to instantly travel from one point to another, no matter what the distance. Allegedly, all one has to do is think of the desired location and the Mother Box summons a Boom Tube. Though never explained, it is known that Element X acts as a matter threshold for a Boom Tube to draw power from. The large booming sound is a result of this interaction and the origin of its nickname. It can remain open for only eight seconds. As a precautionary measure, the New Gods have developed a shielding technology that can prevent booming into a desired area. During a civil war, the X-Pit on Apokolips was known to be outfitted with this technology.

New Gods have used Boom Tubes to travel to any planet, whether it is New Genesis, Apokolips, Earth, or some alien homeworld. There is also evidence that the interstellar fleets of both New Gods groups are outfitted with a Mother Box but never confirmed. It was confirmed that a Boom Tube can be formed in artificial structures, not just natural land masses, when Darkseid and later Mr. Miracle and Big Barda boomed into the Justice League's Watchtower on two separate occassions. Travel around different points on a planet using a Boom Tube is also possible. Mister Miracle was able to use his Mother Box to trace the Boom Tubes used by Granny Goodness and Big Barda to boom to the JLU Metrotower and reverse their polarities, sucking them and their forces back through their tubes to Apokolips.

In the 2050's, a unit from the Justice League boomed from the Metrotower to the Fortress of Solitude. It was in this case that Aquagirl activated one while in telepathic contact with Starro in order to return it and its spawn back to Starro's home planet. The Boom Tube appears to have no adverse health effects for those with super powers. For those without, the after-effects are usually nausea. Both the first and second Batman experienced this and thus, made both leery of using them frequently.
