Friedrich Schiller, a German historian, playwright, and poet, wrote the Ode to Joy in 1785. The verses were inspired by the notion that all humans are united in brotherhood together. Its musical setting was used by later artists well into the 19th century but is most known as the setting for Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in the 1800's.

Mr. Stern, President of Multigon International, was an associate of the terrorist, Red Claw. Drawing from a musical code, the plans for a Multigon resort near Gotham are protected and can only be revealed by playing Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Stern showed off the code and plans with Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne during an impromptu meeting. Later, as Catwoman, Kyle replayed the ode and took photographs of the plans.
