In the 20th century, scientific advancement was again weaponized. This time it took the form of nuclear weapons. The first generation was the atom bomb and generated its blast through nuclear fission. Enriched uranium or plutonium is induced into a critical chain reaction through the "gun" or the "implosion" method which creates an explosion that is the equivalent of 500 kilotons of TNT. Starting on August 6, 1945, two atom bombs were detonated on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing 120,000 and effectively ending World War II. Deployed as gravity bombs, Codenames "Little Boy" and "Fat-Man" were dropped from a B-29 heavy bomber aircraft and detonated through the "implosion" method of its plutonium core at 1800 feet above the cities. After the United States of America, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, the People's Republic of China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea followed with the development of their own.
Blueprints of the atom bombs are still classified by the federal government but it is believed that several spies managed to gain several details of it. The Soviet Union was one country thought to have acquired the information. In the 1990's, a Fat Boy came into the possession of a Gotham mobster. He auctioned it off to the highest bidder starting at $1 million only to have the Joker arrive and steal it. He then kidnapped Mayor Hill and planned to detonate it after leaving the city. Joker would kill everyone, including Harley Quinn. However, Batman, Robin, and Quinn arrived and averted disaster. Robin managed to open the control panel and sever the two correct wires, disabling the countdown.
