The Artifact of Lorta is a mystical tablet with the power to imprison demons, even those of higher classification. Dr. Fate managed to trap Karkull, Seventh Lord of the Inner Pit, in it and hid it in a vase. Somehow, a century later, the vase came into the possession of the Metropolis University Department of Archaeology. A petty thief broke in and stole several objects including the Artifact. After reading Karkull's name, he was possessed by the demon. Having thought destroyed it, it was shocked when Dr. Fate appeared and summoned it in its normal state. Karkull was then resealed in the Artifact.
