The Ankh first appeared as a motif on ancient Thanagarian clothing in 6600 B.C.E. as evidenced when Katar and Chay-Ara Hol crashed in Egypt. They soon built up a civilization and it crumbled just as quickly. From then on, the ankh appeared as a hieroglyphic roughly translated into "eternal life." In most renderings, Egyptian gods are portrayed as holding an ankh in each hand in a crisscross pattern across their chest.

People have assumed the ankh to be a symbol for conceiving a child. It is usually depicted as gods giving the gift of life on the deceased's mummy. Given the strong connection to heliocentricity, the ankh is only carved in gold or copper as a respresentation of the Sun. Taught by Nabu, Dr. Fate's knowledge of magic spells is rarely unmatched. When casting a spell of teleportation, he appears through a person-sized ankh. While both are immortal, it is also interesting to note that Fate's wife, Inza, wears two ankh earrings.
