The Absorbascon is a database kept onboard every Thanagarian ship. It records flight logs and other relevant information and displays them to users through a telepathic interface. These devices have been in use since at least 6600 BC. Katar and Chay-Ara Hol's Absorbascon, similar to an ankh in appearance, was salvaged from their downed ship and used to record their exploits in Egypt. Upon their deaths, the device and ship was buried with them in a pyramid riddled with deathtraps. In the 1990's, the Absorbascon was discovered by Joseph Gardner during a dig. After examining it, his mind was overwhelmed by the information as the device was only designed for Thanagarian minds, which have a special biological resistance to telepathy. The age and condition of the Absorbascon may have also played a role in harming Gardner but it is known that the broken device manifested Gardner's darkest desires into a shadow-like being.
After changing his name to Carter Hall, he spent years trying to contact Hawkgirl and show her the Thanagarian artifacts he discovered. The mission was interrupted by the presence of the shadow being, Shadow Thief, and the pyramid collapsed. It managed to save the Absorbascon and forced Green Lantern, Hawkman, and Shayera Hol (formerly Hawkgirl) to touch the device and learn the true history of Katar and Chay-Ara Hol. After Hawkman refused to kill Green Lantern and absorbed Shadow Thief, it appears the device was confiscated and/or destroyed by the Justice League Unlimited.
