In 1936, Gregory Sanders lost all of his family from a combination of disease and murder. Sanders became a famous radio identity called "the Prairie Troubadour". When he wasn't on the radio, Sanders donned the same cowboy costume as Vigilante to avenge his father's death. Vigilante served on the crime fighting group known as the Seven Soldiers of Victory, and along with his teammates were thrust back in time. Ironically, Vigilante wandered the Old West from 1895-1897 after which he was brought to the present and then joined the Justice League Unlimited. Vigilante is a skilled street fighter and fights with a pair of pistols and a lariat.
Vigilante was the third member of a party led by Shayera Hol to investigate a distress call on an alien planet. It turned out, the miners were really a small Thanagarian force looking to extract Shayera Hol. Vigilante displayed his doubt in Shayera, not only for her part of the Thanagarian occupation of Earth, but also that he was caught while fighting them and was jailed. Still, Vigilante and Vixen refused to let one of their teammates to turn themselves over. Though injured, Vigilante used his survival skills to his advantage and set traps to slow down the remaining Thanagarians as well as his pilot skills; which could still use a little practice.
