Rex Mason, once a soldier in the US Marine Corp and friend of John Stewart, Mason ended up working at Stagg Enterprises. Despite his playboy demeanor, Mason began secretly dating his boss' daughter, Sapphire Stagg and later became engaged. However, Mason was asking too many questions about the practices of the company and Simon Stagg decided to manipulate Mason into taking part in his 'Metamorpho Project'. The project was a bold attempt to chemically engineer a superior worker to brave any environmental danger. Mason was transformed into a living, breathing chemical reaction. To complicate matters worse, Stagg lied to Mason and made him attack Green Lantern and in the process, the Justice League but Sapphire was able to turn him straight.
As Metamorpho, Mason is a shape shifter able to transform any part of his body or entirely into any chemical element or phase. Metamorpho also seemingly dies but really just becomes inert while his body reconstitutes itself.
