Born as Izaya the Inheritor on the planet New Genesis, Izaya had to undergo much tragedy in his life before leading his people to a frail sense of peace. Izaya lost his wife Avia when Steppenwolf of Apokolips went on a hunting trip and killer her. Meanwhile, Darkseid , Steppenwolf's nephew, assumed power and sparked a war between New Genesis and Apokolips. In retribution, Izaya killed Steppenwolf (who was later revived by Apokoliptian technology). Izaya was chosen by the Source, a manifestation of the Creator's power, to become its voice in this plane of existence. Changing his name to Highfather, Izaya formed a peace pact with Darkseid. To symbolize the peace, the two leaders exchanged their sons. Highfather raised Darkseid's son, Orion. However, an innate rage still existed within Orion.
As part of the peace pact, Highfather took several systems under his protection. If Darkseid were to invade with a military force, he would meet the retaliation of Highfather. Orion became aware of Darkseid's hand in the planet Earth and soon Highfather declared that Earth was now under his protection. However, Darkseid continually exploited loopholes in the agreement to continually attempt to take over the planet.
The staff that Highfather carries channels the energies of the Source, allowing him to create at will. In regard to making important choices, Highfather often communes with the Source.
