Lazarus Lane was an expert at gun fighting and using the whip. In 1866, he was left for dead by bank robbers then was struck by lightning, leaving him in a coma. An Apache chief named Wise Owl prayed next to Lane's body. What followed was Lane's spirit becoming corporealized or solidified. As El Diablo, he roamed the western frontier fighting crime with his whip.
