Dr. Charles McNider lost his eyesight when a grenade landed in his room. Myra Mason, McNider's girlfriend helped accommodate his disability by helping out in his research lab. McNider discovered he could still see only in complete darkness when he was startled by a wild owl who he later adopted and named "Hooty." McNider created special infrared goggles that allows him see in both the day and at night. McNider also invented Blackout Bombs that accomplishes it's namesake. McNider became a costumed crime fighter and became a force in bringing down several underground rackets. McNider retains his former identity of being a gifted physician.
