Yao Ming was born on September 12, 1980 in Shanghai, China to two former basketball players, Yao Zhiyuan and Fang Fengdi. Both were well over six feet tall. At age nine, Yao began playing basketball and later joined the Shanghai Sharks junior team at age 13. He practiced for 10 hours everyday to make the team then joined the senior team four years later. In 1999, Yao stood at seven feet, six inches tall. The Sharks deputy manager, Li Yaomin, convinced Yao to enter the NBA Draft. He entered it in 2002 despite some controversy if the Chinese Basketball Association would allow him to. Yao was the first draft pick in the first round by the Houston Rockets and became the first international player to be chosen first overall without playing in the United States of America first.

He was later chosen to join the Hoop Squad. He accepted and became Center Force. Center Force's suit gives him the power to extend his limbs to various lengths.
