Michael Maxwell, a game warden for an African preserve, was stranded on Mount Kilamanjaro, the inspiration of an Ernest Hemingway story. Maxwell was befriended by a red ape and over time gained its trust. The ape decided to give Maxwell an ancient helmet that allows him to communicate with animals telepathically.
When Wonder Woman was transformed into a pig by Circe, Batman enlisted B'wana Beast for his powers as well as his honed tracking skills. B'wana Beast also initiated help from the Crimson Avenger, Elongated Man and Red Tornado. Beast also exhibits a crude personality as well.
