Professor Ray Palmer works at the prestigious Ivytown University in Boston. By chance, he came upon a fragment of a white dwarf star and studied its miraculous physical properties and unique density.
By employing a lens and ultraviolet light, Palmer discovered the star could be used to shrink objects but after awhile they all exploded. Palmer devised a suit that utilized the star and soon learned that his genetic makeup allowed him to handle the changes in size.
At a microscopic size, Palmer can travel on electronic pulses in telephones or in the subatomic universe with relative ease. One an occasion the immortal, Vandal Savage attempted to steal Palmer's white dwarf star for one of his plans to take over the world but was stopped by the Justice League.
Now, the Atom, Palmer is often called on for recon, surveillance or to solve complex problems that fighting can't solve. Despite being microscopic, the star's density allows Palmer to match the strength of a normal sized human but despite all this, the Atom is often underestimated as a superhero.
