Gargoyles are monsters observed in Egyptian and Greek culture. However, they are most famous in medieval times. In the 7th century, Clotaire II was charged with defeating a gargoyle terrorizing the countryside of Rouen. A criminal sentenced to death volunteered to capture it and succeeded. The criminal was freed and from that day on, the common symbol of St. Romain the Archbishops of Rouen became the gargoyle, said to protect from and ward off evil spirits. Although a demon, the gargoyle was often used to scare people into religion as a sign of the end times.

Along the same theme of protection, several gargoyle statues adorn a space within the Tower of Fate. They bear some resemblance to the Parisian gargoyles that adorn the Notre Dame Cathedral. While performing a ceremony to seal off the Old Ones, Dr. Fate was disturbed by the intrusion of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Hawkgirl. Unable to banish Hawkgirl, he animated several gargoyles to attack her. The anti-magical properties of the Nth Metal mace she carried easily destroyed them.
