The Cassowary is the third tallest and second heaviest bird, next to the Emu and Ostrich. All three share the common trait of being flightless. The Cassowary is native to Australia and Papua New Guinea but are endangered due to the introduction of invasive species such as pigs. Infamous for being shy and docile, the Cassowary can be a dangerous animal if threatened. The three toes are lined like daggers, including a 5 inch one, and one kick from it can cause serious harm from disembowlment. In addition, they can run up to 31 miles per hour, jump 5 feet, and swim. But they are more well-known for their crests, called casques, whose true purpose is unknown.
A male Cassowary was kept by the Gotham Zoo in their aviary enclosure. While chasing the Penguin, Batman came face to face with one. Unable to utilize his belt, Batman used a poisonous humminbird and jabbed it into the Cassowary. Caught off guard, it quickly retreated deep into the aviary.
