Hartley Rathaway comes from a wealthy family, who spent millions on scientific experiments geared toward restoring his hearing. Eventually, Rathaway was cured. Now able to hear, he became obsessed with sound and music. In the process, he also became emotionally distant and mentally unstable. Rathaway began to experiment on devices that could manipulate sound. He used his family fortune to buy the most advanced technology. Rathaway then decided to become a super villain as the Pied Piper and perform the most daring thefts.
